In the realm of senior care, medication management plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and well-being of older adults.

To ensure optimal safety and efficacy, it is good practice to involve a Registered Nurse (RN) in the supervision of medications.

In this blog post, we will explore why an RN’s assessment is invaluable in this context.

The Role of Registered Nurses in Medication Management

Specializing in Senior Medication Management

Registered Nurses possess specialized knowledge and training in elder care, making them uniquely qualified to oversee medication administration for seniors.

Their expertise extends beyond ensuring the correct medication is administered.

RNs possess a comprehensive understanding of how aging affects the body’s response to drugs, absorption rates, potential allergies, and individual variations in drug efficacy.

Leveraging this knowledge, they can proactively identify potential complications and adjust medication regimens accordingly.

Navigating Complex Medication Management

Seniors may have multiple health conditions and be on numerous medications, which increases the complexity of medication management.

RNs are trained to recognize potential drug interactions and contraindications, mitigating the risk of adverse effects.

They collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure that all prescribed medications are appropriate for the senior’s specific health situation.

Tailoring Medication Management for Aging Bodies

Seniors often experience physiological changes as they age, such as a decline in organ function and changes in metabolism.

These changes can significantly impact how medications are absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted.

RNs are well-versed in these age-related changes and can adjust medication doses or schedules accordingly to ensure optimal therapeutic outcomes.

Creating a Comprehensive Medication List

Managing medications for seniors requires an accurate and up-to-date medication list that includes both prescribed and over-the-counter drugs.

While doctors and pharmacists may be familiar with prescribed medications, they may not be aware of non-prescription supplements being consumed by the senior.

The involvement of an RN, who takes a holistic approach to care, enables the compilation of a comprehensive medication list, facilitating better assessment and management of potential risks and interactions.

Minimizing Risks and Enhancing Outcomes

The primary goal of involving an RN in senior medication management is to minimize side effects and negative outcomes.

Through vigilant monitoring and attention to detail, RNs can detect early signs of adverse reactions or medication ineffectiveness.

They collaborate with physicians and pharmacists to make necessary adjustments, ensuring seniors receive the right medications in appropriate dosages and via the correct administration route.

This significantly reduces the likelihood of medication errors, enhances therapeutic outcomes, and improves overall quality of life for seniors.

Encouraging Patient Education

Registered nurses play a vital role in patient education. They take the time to explain medication regimens, potential side effects, and precautions to both seniors and their caregivers.

This empowers them to actively participate in their own care, promoting medication adherence and understanding.

Additionally, RNs provide valuable guidance on proper storage and disposal of medications, further ensuring senior safety.

Conclusion

When it comes to the complex task of managing medications for seniors, the supervision of a Registered Nurse is invaluable.

Through their specialized knowledge, attention to detail, and holistic approach to care, RNs can identify potential risks, interactions, and complications associated with medication administration.

Setting up home health care can seem like a daunting task, but it can also be beneficial for those who require it. Home health care can provide patients with a personalized, convenient, and cost-effective way to continue receiving medical care in the comfort of their home. If you are looking to set up home health care in Michigan, there are a few steps you can take to ensure a smooth and successful process.

Step 1: Schedule a Consult with Your Primary Doctor

The first step in setting up home health care is to schedule a consultation with your primary doctor. During this visit, you can discuss your decision to receive home health care and your doctor can help you determine what level of care is appropriate for your needs.
It’s important to have an open and honest discussion with your doctor about why you are considering home health care. Be sure to communicate your goals and concerns so that your doctor can recommend the best course of action for you.

Step 2: Determine the Type of Care You Need

Before setting up home health care, it’s important to determine the type of care you or your loved one needs. Some common types of home health care include:

Skilled Nursing: This type of care is provided by Registered Nurses (RNs) and can include continued medical treatment, wound care, medication management, and other medical services.

Physical therapy: A Physical Therapist can provide exercises and treatments to help patients recover from accidents or injuries or improve their mobility.

Occupational therapy: An Occupational Therapist can help patients regain their independence with daily activities, such as dressing or cooking.

Speech therapy: A Speech Therapist can assist you with communication and swallowing difficulties.

Private Duty Care: This type of care includes assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADL), such as bathing, grooming, dressing, eating, transportation, etc. This type of care includes non-medical assistance.

Determining the type of care needed will help you research the right home health care provider for you or your loved one.

Step 3: Find a Home Health Care Provider

Once you have determined the type of care needed, you can begin looking for a home health care provider in Michigan. It’s important to choose a reputable and reliable provider licensed by the state.

You can also search for home health care providers in Michigan through the Michigan Home Health Association or the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. You can also ask for recommendations from your doctor or Medical Social Workers (MSWs).

Step 4: Notify Your Physician of Your Preferred Home Health Care Provider

Once you have decided on the type of home health care you would like to receive, be sure to notify your physician of your preferred home health care provider. This will allow your physician to fax over a prescription to the provider.

Step 5: Confirm the Prescription was Processed

Finally, contact the home care intake department to confirm that the prescription was processed. This will ensure that your home health care services can begin as soon as possible.

Step 6: Verify Your Insurance Coverage

Before beginning home health care, it’s important to verify your insurance coverage. Many insurance plans cover home health care, but it’s important to check with your insurance provider to determine the specific coverage.

If you need financial assistance, you can also request the home health care agency to help you with researching Medicare or Medicaid option in your state.

Step 7: Prepare Your Home

Preparing your home for home health care setup is a crucial step in the process. Depending on the type of care needed, you may need certain modifications to your home, such as installing grab bars or ramps.

Also make sure your home is clean and free of fall hazards. This includes disposing clutter, ensuring well lit and clear walkways.

Step 8: Meet with Your Home Health Care Provider

Once you have chosen a home health care provider, you will have an initial meeting with them to discuss your needs and develop a care plan. This step allows you to ask any questions you may have and clarify them before a care plan is prepared by your care team in consultation with your physician.

During this meeting, you will also discuss the schedule and frequency of visits. Depending on the type of care you may need, visits can range from a few times a week to daily.

With home health care, you can enjoy the benefits of personalized care and support, all from the comfort of your own home. At Affinity Home Care Agency, we believe that home is where the heart is, and that’s why we are committed to helping patients undergoing medical care maintain their independence and dignity.
If you’re looking for a trusted home health care provider for yourself or an aging parent in Michigan, contact us today at 248-363-8650 or info@affinityhomecareagency.com.

In the journey of caring for our senior loved ones, we often encounter challenges that affect their ability to engage in everyday activities. At Affinity Home Care Agency, we understand the importance of ensuring the well-being and independence of seniors. That’s why we want to introduce you to Occupational Therapy (OT).

What is Occupational Therapy?
OT is a specialized healthcare profession that focuses on helping individuals, including seniors, overcome challenges that may hinder their ability to engage in daily activities.

OT takes a holistic approach by addressing physical, cognitive, and emotional aspects of well-being.

For seniors, OT offers personalized interventions to enhance mobility, balance, strength, and cognitive abilities.

It aims to maintain independence, promote engagement in meaningful activities, and improve overall quality of life.

Occupational Therapists evaluate various factors, including physical impairments, cognitive function, emotional well-being, and environmental barriers, to develop comprehensive intervention plans.

The Significance of Occupational Therapy for Seniors

As you age, you may experience physical limitations, reduced mobility, cognitive changes, and difficulties performing daily tasks, which can impact your independence and overall well-being.

Occupational Therapy plays a crucial role in addressing these physical challenges by creating customized exercise plans and employing therapeutic techniques that enhance seniors’ mobility, balance, and strength.

This leads to increased safety, self-assurance, and the ability to actively participate in daily activities.

Moreover, OT focuses on cognitive challenges by utilizing memory improvement methods, cognitive exercises, and adaptable strategies.

These interventions aid seniors in maintaining mental acuity, decision-making skills, and independence in their daily routines.

By effectively addressing both physical and cognitive challenges, Occupational Therapy enables seniors to maintain their independence and enhance their well-being.

When to Consider Occupational Therapy for Seniors

Recognizing the signs that indicate a need for Occupational Therapy is crucial for seniors and their caregivers. Some common situations and conditions include:

  1. Difficulty performing daily tasks: If a senior struggles with self-care activities like dressing, bathing, grooming, or household chores, it may be time to consider Occupational Therapy.
  2. Balance and mobility issues: Frequent falls, unsteadiness while walking, or difficulty getting up from a chair or bed can signal the need for Occupational Therapy to improve mobility and prevent accidents.
  3. Cognitive challenges: Memory loss, difficulty concentrating, or trouble with problem-solving can benefit from Occupational Therapy interventions aimed at maintaining cognitive function and independence.
  4. Chronic pain or joint stiffness: Seniors experiencing chronic pain or limited joint mobility can find relief and improve function through Occupational Therapy techniques and interventions.
  5. Post-surgery or hospitalization: After a surgery or hospital stay, seniors may experience weakness, limited mobility, or difficulty returning to their daily routines. Occupational Therapy can aid in the rehabilitation process and help seniors regain their independence.
  6. Chronic conditions: Seniors with chronic conditions such as arthritis, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, or dementia can benefit from OT interventions tailored to their specific needs. These interventions can improve functionality, manage symptoms, and enhance quality of life.

Early intervention is key when considering Occupational Therapy for seniors. It is important to encourage seniors and their caregivers to seek professional guidance as soon as signs of functional decline or challenges arise.

By seeking OT services early, seniors can receive timely interventions that can prevent further decline, enhance their abilities, and promote independence.

Conclusion
Occupational Therapy is essential for seniors as it has the power to transform the lives of seniors by addressing their challenges, empowering them to engage in activities they love, and promoting independence.

If you are caring for a senior loved one or if you are a senior seeking to enhance your well-being and independence, we encourage you to reach out to our occupational therapists at info@affinityhomecareagency.com or call us at 248-363-8650.

Our team is here to provide guidance, answer any questions you may have, and assist you in understanding how OT can benefit your specific situation.

As the population of senior citizens in Michigan continues to grow, so does the need for reliable home health care services.

Home health care provides personalized care to the elderly, helping them maintain their independence and stay in their homes for as long as possible.

Here are five must-haves for choosing a home health care service in Michigan.

1. Deep roots in the community:
A reliable and trustworthy senior care service would be well entrenched in their local community via events, activities, volunteering, and great caregiving service.

Here at Affinity Home Care Agency, Dr. Jerry Zayid and his family have been a part of the Commerce, Michigan community for four generations. They know the people and the place very well and are the trusted in-home caregiving service for seniors in the community.

2. 24/7 care services:
Certain chronic health conditions may require round-the-clock care, depending on the severity.

A reliable senior care service would ensure they are able to accommodate your aging parent’s or elderly loved ones health needs and customize a care plan accordingly.

And that includes assigning professional care members to be available 24/7 to care for your loved one.

Affinity Home Care Agency offers round-the-clock care services, ensuring that seniors receive the care they need at any time of day.

3. Strict hiring process:
A crucial difference that sets apart a well established, trusted senior care service from an independent caregiver or a volunteer, is the adherence to a strict hiring policy.

A home health care service for seniors is only as good as their caregiving staff. If the staff who interacts with your loved ones, lacks the specified qualifications, certifications, or behavioral checks, it could undermine the overall care plan.

Affinity Home Care Agency has a strict hiring process in place, including drug screening, background checks, and ongoing training, to ensure that only the most qualified and compassionate caregivers are providing care to clients.

4. Regular and easy communication:
Another key factor to consider when researching a senior care service is their approachability and communication pattern. If an agency is evasive, vague with their answers, or unreachable along with poor customer support, this should be a red flag.

Affinity provides a family portal for patients and their families to connect with caregivers or Registered Nurses, as well as to upload and view reports, updates, and photographs in real-time.

5. Affordable care:
The cost of nursing homes and assisted living facilities can be high, and not everyone can afford it.

Home care is usually less expensive than institutional care, and it allows seniors to receive personalized care in the comfort of their homes.

Home health care providers in Michigan also accept insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare, making it accessible to seniors who cannot afford it.

Affinity Home Care Agency offers affordable care for the senior community, making it accessible for those who need it the most.

Knowing that your loved one is receiving proper care from a trusted home health care provider gives peace of mind to family members. They do not have to worry about the well-being of their loved ones or leave their job to care for them.

It is therefore essential to look for a trusted home health care provider because it ensures that seniors receive the necessary medical care and attention they require.

If your elderly loved one or aging parents need help or care with a chronic medical condition or assisted daily living, Affinity Home Care Agency is here to help. Contact us today at 248-363-8650 or info@affinityhomecareagency.com for more information on our home health care services for seniors in Michigan.

Message From the Office

Well, it’s November and typically at this time of year we begin to settle into routines of holiday preparations, decorations, gatherings and reflections on the past year. Well, that might be pretty tough for some this year. However, if we can find ways to be grateful for little things, we can bolster the resolve to find more joy. Maybe we can look for ways to help others, even in small ways, and connect with family and friends either virtually or from a safe distance protecting each other.

We start November with Veterans Day. What a special day for anyone that has served our country and the families that support our servicemen and women. It’s a great day (week) to celebrate their dedication to protecting our freedoms and their sacrifices. I always love to see the community come together with free meals, discounts and special tributes to veterans. Even covid-19 couldn’t dampen the gratitude we have for veterans. Thank you to all our veterans!!

November ends with Thanksgiving and is the kick off to the holiday season! This is a special day where American families of all races and religions come together to count their many blessings and share good company. Families have many different traditions they look forward to all year. This year it will likely look a little different. Gatherings might be just immediate family members that reside in their home and a video chat with friends and families that can’t be together to share their traditional Thanksgiving meals. Dinners and gatherings may be smaller this Thanksgiving, but the sentiment of the holiday still remains! We can’t lose focus on what we truly have to be thankful for right now. We can still lend support to our families and friends that may be ill, alone or in need. We can make extra food and deliver meals to our families that can’t come into our homes.

Affinity Home Care Agency wishes everyone a safe, healthy and happy Thanksgiving. We are grateful that we can assist you in your homes, care from your loved ones and make your lives more comfortable. We are thankful we have such an extended family! If you need us to help your family a bit more during the holiday season, let us know.

Be safe, stay 6’ apart and wear a mask, if you can safely do so.

Welcome to the family!

We probably all know someone that has diabetes. 34.2 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes. That’s a rate of more than 1 in 10 Americans.  The American Diabetes Association estimates that 1 in 3 Americans are considered pre-diabetic. Think about how many people are in your family and these numbers become staggering. Type 2 diabetes makes up 95% of all those with diabetes. Why are these statistics so important to be aware of and to take notice? People diagnosed with diabetes are 2 to 4 times more likely to die of heart disease related effects from diabetes. However, diabetes is preventable and treatable.

While these numbers can seem daunting, everyone has the power to make healthier choices and control their outcomes with diabetes. As with any illness, it is important to work closely with your doctor if you are not feeling well, or especially if you have been diagnosed with diabetes. The American Diabetes Association offers people hope, help and support. During this month they even have several virtual events that you can participate in to become healthier and take a more active role in your ability to manage your diabetes. Check out www.diabetes.org for more information.

So what are some of the steps you can take to prevent a diabetes diagnosis or reduce your risks of diabetes related consequences? Making healthy choices with your nutrition to create a balanced diet and maintain a healthy weight are 2 of the biggest things you can control to set yourself up for success. Daily exercise and activity is also an important factor in your health, as is refraining from using tobacco. These are all lifestyle tips that everyone can benefit from and can help you prevent a diabetes diagnosis for you or a family member. If you do already have a diabetes diagnosis, following these steps and the specific directions of your doctor, can prevent or delay any health consequences related to diabetes or disease progression.

During November as we pay special attention to diabetes awareness, it is important to note that you are in control! You have the opportunity to thrive, not just get by, and live a full life despite a diabetes diagnosis. Diabetes is a disease that can be treated and adverse health effects can be avoided if you make the choice to live a healthier lifestyle today for a healthier tomorrow. If you need help managing your diabetes, contact your doctor. You can also work with a nutritionist or contact the American Diabetes Association for more information. November Employee of the Month: Carol Croll

This month we  highlight the Affinity Home Care Agency’s November Employee of the month, Carol Croll. Carol has been one of Affinity’s physical therapists for 6 ½ years. She originally wanted to follow her grandmother’s lead and become a nurse. However as a former softball and basketball player, she discovered the opportunities in physical therapy and how it relates to work and injury rehabilitation. In 1985 she decided to volunteer at Huron Valley Hospital physical therapy department and was hired within the week. She has worked in PT and/or athletic training ever since.

Carol loves having the opportunity to meet and help a wide variety of people through her career as a physical therapist. Helping her clients recover from injury, or regaining strength and mobility, creates the fullness of each day for Carol. Some of the challenges she faces day to day on the job is educating her patients on the fact that the goal for everyone is different.  It might mean that they need to learn to use an assistive device to keep them safe and mobile. Some of the hardest cases are when patients are pushed too hard by family and Carol needs to explain that this may not be the time to push. Being able to help people makes her thrilled she chose this path 26 years later!

Carol loves the collaboration and teamwork with the rest of her Affinity Home Care Agency peers. She has benefited from their conversations and the opportunity to observe them at work. She acknowledges so many go above and beyond their work duties everyday to help each other. They share the ultimate goal of making their clients’ lives better. She loves being a part of such a talented and loving team.

Carol has a very busy and full life outside of her career as a physical therapist. She recently remarried a wonderful man and combined they have 5 amazing kids. They have a wide range in age from “grown and flown” with a wedding planned next year, a recent college graduate working in sales, a college sophomore who is also working in his church, a high school sophomore and a 5th grader! Keeping busy with an active family has built in fun and challenges; especially with covid! To add to the mix, they are a furry fun dog family!! Carol keeps everything fun by taking a lot of pictures and making yearly photo books. She loves watching sporting events, gardening, boating and fishing and sharing a family bonfire while watching the dogs play in their large new yard. When it is safe, Carol looks forward to going back to cruises and traveling to visit family in Chicago and Ohio. Carol loves to go to church, spend their Sundays watching football and making a family meal. She misses large family gatherings.

Thank you Carol for sharing your life and talents with the extended Affinity Home Care Agency family! Congratulations on being chosen as our November Employee of the Month!

Client of the Month-Marjorie Poland

It is safe to say 2020 has been a year of surprises, frustration and finding ways to handle adversity. This month we have the opportunity to catch up with a client that we met when she needed assistance after suffering a broken shoulder. Marjorie Poland was lucky however. When her shoulder was broken in a fall, she didn’t need surgery. Her shoulder was immobilized and when she was ready, she called Affinity Home Care Agency for help. After an initial consultation, Marjorie met with a nurse followed by a couple of PT sessions and finally OT with Deb for about 2 months. Marjorie is generous in her compliments about how Affinity helped her heal and recover, but she absolutely gushes when she speaks about Deb, her occupational therapist, “I absolutely love Deb! She showed up every visit with new exercises that she did with me!” Marjorie really appreciated that Deb spent each session working with her and not just giving her hand outs. The planning that went into each visit with Marjorie is something that she believes was key to her recovery.

Marjorie Poland is a retired nurse. She lived in the Metro Detroit area since 1959, but has actually been a Florida resident for 20 years. She worked as a registered nurse until she retired at 65. Her career spanned working in the Farmington Schools, teaching a medical skills program for 10 yrs and worked in administration for special education. Marjorie has 3 grown children and 6 grandchildren. It seems one granddaughter will be following in her footsteps as she enters the U of M PA program!

20 years ago, Marjorie and her husband sold their family home to their daughter and moved to the Tampa area. She enjoyed golfing and an active lifestyle at the beach. She has since moved a bit more inland into a senior gated community where she is still very active. With covid restrictions she still does her water walking and grocery shopping, but other things are a bit more subdued. Marjorie spends her summers up here in Michigan in the family home that now belongs to her daughter. When she fell, she knew she had to have a successful recovery, so she could return to Florida when the weather turns colder.

We are thrilled to report that Marjorie is preparing to return to warmer weather after a full recovery! Marjorie credits her ability to recover to the Affinity team and her fabulous OT, Deb. What a true pleasure it is to assist Marjorie in her recovery and to know that she is comfortable to return to her active life. That is truly one of the best achievements of home care services! Congratulations, Marjorie Poland on your recovery and for being Affinity’s Client of the Month! Thank you for letting Affinity Home Care Agency help you along your recovery journey!!  Have a safe trip home to Florida!!

Changes in Balance and Mobility in Seniors

We often see a gradual change in our parents or our friends as we age. Often it is a stiff knee, a sore back, hip pain or onset of plantar fasciitis that makes us start wearing more stable shoes or even make people move less. Maybe it is the moving less that really brings on the changes. It could be a fear of falling that makes seniors stop moving as much.

The reality is that moving less could be a sign that you need to move more; but be sure you are safe. We all know that something in motion stays in motion and something at rest will stay at rest. If we can prevent mobility issues, or correct some mobility issues, we can improve our lifestyle.  Research shows us that when seniors become less active, they can become more isolated and a downward spiral can begin. To try to prevent this spiral, we have a few tips to try to prevent mobility issues, or to try to prevent them from getting worse.  The key is to always consult your doctor. They may have some tips like getting some physical therapy and/or occupational therapy to start you off right!  Of course, Affinity Home Care Agency can help with that. Let’s try these ideas that can work simultaneously to keep us active as we begin to face cooler temperatures.

  • Stay active: This is our goal, right? Regular exercise can increase strength and balance.
  • Maintain healthy weight and healthy diet: A healthy diet promotes healthy weight. Maintaining a healthy weight puts less stress on bones and joints.
  • Check if medications have side effects: Any medicine can result in drowsiness or distraction, which can lead to unsteadiness or falls. Discuss this with your physician.
  • Eliminate fall hazards in the home: Pay special attention to safety equipping the bathroom and kitchen. Clear clutter and loose rugs or wires. Use night-lights in bathrooms, hallways, and bedrooms. Affinity can help identify some risks.
  • Is it time for a walking aid? Would you feel more comfortable with a cane? First check with a doctor or physical therapist to find out if it is needed or what type is needed.
  • Remember to test your vision and hearing: Seeing poorly or not hearing well can cause mobility problems and lead to falls.
  • Wear sturdy and well-fitted shoes: If you wear comfortable and stable shoes you can reduce the risk of falling.
  • Be social: During the time of covid-19 safety it is increasingly difficult for seniors to be social. Be creative! While the weather is nice, take a stroll. Learn how to use technology to reconnect with people. Companions from Affinity can facilitate these calls.
  • Speak up: Tell your doctor about mobility concerns, problems, and mention any falls.

During self-quarantine and concerns around covid-19, seniors are becoming more and more isolated. This is especially true for people needing in-home care. Making sure people are as mobile  interactive as much as possible is a tough balance sometimes. Affinity works very hard to create safe, social interactions for people trying to stay as safe as possible. Working on mobility at home is a key component to staying young at heart! Having a great home care companion is a wonderful resource!
